The video Conversation presents the audience with a short excerpt of the everyday. However during the course of video the audience sees this footage several times, giving them opportunity to reassess their initial interpretations over and over. The footage, although not staged, has been heavily edited. With each viewing a layer of this editing is removed, so that the imperceptible additions revealed affect the viewers ability to form a concrete conclusion. The audience oscillate between voyeurs and viewers as the use of filmic techniques push and pull them from the hidden voyeuristic point-of-view through which the piece is filmed. Ultimately one can never actually know the truth of the characters or the situation, but we are left with a comprehension of how we interact with, and make assumptions about the lives of others. |
