"21st Century Flâneur" was originally conceived for outdoor exhibition, having said that, it was installed in the perfect location in the Limerick City Gallery of Art.
The piece reflects the change in society and the value placed on human life. The idea of replacing the CCTV camera with a “real” human was a humorous take on the psychology of Jeremy Benthams “Panopticon” and the classic notion of George Orwells Big Brother.
With technology increasingly creating a wedge between humans, we find ourselves accepting an inability to confront our observers. The power system of this relationship tips completely, such that, not only is the “empowered” observer now visible for our own observations, he is now
on display for us up on his plinth and the ability to end this situation of observation becomes ours. Despite this his presence remains disconcerting and dominates the ambiance of the room.
