FRIEND OR FOE
For this show I had a series of photographs displayed in a long low industrial style tunnel. The lighting was focused on the pieces leaving the tunnel trail off into darkness giving a sense of foreboding and paranoia.
At the end of an off-shoot tunnel I created an Installation. The viewer turned a corner in the low tunnel to be faced with a dead end, except for a blinding spot light that faces directly at the viewer. Now the viewer becomes the subject of the piece. The second function of the light is to
create a blinding darkness beyond it much like theatre stage lighting does for an actor.
In view is a plinth with a security monitor while in the other corner is an easel with a CCTV camera attached. The viewer can clearly see the camera which relays their own image to the monitor.
Now the viewer becomes two people, the voyeur and the subject. As the voyeur, they become detached from their own image and watch expectantly for an unknown event which may or may not happen, similar to watching a “Big Brother” programme on TV. As the subject, the situation is
simple and fun, as the camera is displayed jovially and clearly for the viewer.
