Unknown Capitals is a European wide project involving artists from ten European capitals, initiated by curator Zsófia Ilosvai. The object is to break down or reinforce the stereotypes, and portray the capitals using a mixture of photography and sound. Geographically speaking, Ireland
is close to Europe, however being accessible only by sea or air has separated us psychologically a great deal. Consequently Dublin was to a large extent mono-cultural up until our economic boom transformed the economy and brought Ireland into the limelight.
Since then Dublin City has changed quite dramatically. With the influx of non-nationals working, studying or seeking refuge, there has been a total swing in the ambiance of the city. Now, very much a multi-cultural city, we see the streets decorated with signs and notices in many languages
and alphabets. Concurrently the variety of languages that can be heard on a stroll through the streets makes you forget there is one dominant language on the island. Fragments of conversations in Polish, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Italian and French (among others) drift past us broadening our
aural palate.
